RfR outside Rome?

Postby JamesM » Sun Feb 21, 2010 12:43 pm

Obviously I'm going to be busy running Changeling until the Summer but after that, depending on how well-staffed the 'main' venue is for WaW3 I'm considering picking up the baton for this. However, Rome itself as a setting just seems a little too vast and epic for a non-TT game and so I'm interested in seeing whether people would be interested in playing a RfR game that wasn't set in Rome herself. Hopefully the smaller setting would make the game easier to run, with more space for PCs to flourish due to the lack of a large, established hierarchy of NPCs.

I'd be very open to alternatives but right now the most logical choice for me seems to be Londinium in the mid-second century due to my personal 'expertise' (although 'expertise' is stretching it a bit I did live on the base of the Legio II Augusta for 8 years.). Londinium was a rich, thriving port easily capable of supporting 15-30 Vampires and as the capital of Britannia it seems like there would be good reason for Kindred from Rome who want to carve out a niche for themselves moving there.

I guess my question is would people be interested in such a setting or not? You'd lose a lot of the more iconic aspects of Rome and the distance from the Senex would give the political game a different flavour but we could, I think, still create a setting that was rich and vibrant. It would also remain a non-crossover game.

Anyway... please post your thoughts but don't get too excited as this is incredibly provisional at this stage and is merely me seeing if it's worth giving further thought or not.

Expressing interest, whenever you decide to revisit this. I briefly looked up Londinium, and it looks like you'd have all the Roman flavor you'd need, just not the big scenic locations and toys, which isn't as important to me personally.

I would like to express interest as well, and offer some suggestions, if I may.

A locale in Gaul would give the players a chance to interact with history. This opens a tremendous window to fight with Vercingetorix, or with the great Gaius Julius Ceasar, Or sack rome as a pict, Or if we decide to go to londoninium, or somewhere near, we could interact with Hadrian, with the building of hadrians wall. So, my question is what would be the date? Another question is what would the flavor of the story? would we be allowed to play 'barbarians' as a sometime antagonist? Or is everyone going to find a concept to fit in with the roman-esque theme, another question is mortals, would they be allowed?

An alternative setting to think about, is pompeii or herculeaneuam, maybe Athens or Ionia, a melting pot of trade, art, gladiators, politics, a scenic, smaller, cleaner version of rome. The place is happy, vibrant, and pleasant, set nearly directly on the sea,. This would allow more freedom of concepts for clans, bloodlines, and covenants. It allows for people to be Roman, if they want, and not if they don't, and takes the pressure of having huge amounts of other vampires in the city. In addition, when we are finished, or the game is dying off, we can simply end it with the 'Countdown to doomsday' with the eruption of vesuvius. Or some invasion, revolt, in greece.

Just a suggestion, and my sincerest offer to help, in any capacity.

Greece was pretty civilized in that era. I'm just saying. ;)

Figured I should post here to let people know that due to lack of interest this is now officially dead in the water... so I'll be focusing on WaW's main chronicle instead.
